January 3, 2022

Portfolio Insight first introduced Dividend Radar: DividendChampions, Contenders, and Challengers with actionable metrics, on May 15,2020. Our automated list is produced every Friday based on broker-grade data and a rules-based automated approach that ensures accurate and timely data. DividendRadar is the most accurate list, and it’s free for everyone to use.

Since the calendar year 2021 has drawn to a close, we thought we would perform a high-level analysis of the Dividend Champions, namely those companies who have increased their dividend at least 25consecutive years.

We started with the list of Dividend Champions produced as of December 31, 2021, and used our Portfolio Insight app to help sort the data into meaningful groupings.

The Dividend Champions

This chart ranks all 130 Dividend Champions by quartile-based on the latest one-year Total Trailing Returns (TTR) as of December 31,2021. We also benchmarked the one-year TTR performance against the S&P index (28.75%). As shown in the chart above, half of the Dividend Champions produced at least a 21.82% TTR and 33% outperformed the S&P index.

The Top Ten Leaders

Dividend Champion Leaders

Based on the one-year TTR, this table ranks the ten best-performing Dividend Champions. It also shows the latest 3, 5, and 10-year CAGRs for TTR and dividend growth (DG). The consistency of double-digit TTR performance for NUE, WST, LOW, CSL, ALB, and AOS is compelling. LOW also rewarded its shareholders with a double-digit dividend increase during each period.

The Bottom Ten Laggards

Dividend Champion Laggards

This table ranks the ten worst performing Dividend Champions based on the TTR for the latest year. It also shows the latest 3, 5, and10-year CARGs and the deteriorating performance for MDT, LANC, and UHT.
